Crowds of Shanghainese on the Bund to celebrate the handover of Hong Kong on 1 July, 1997.

These young men don't think much of my camera. Within a minute they will turn to inspect me.

The Bund is an historical oddity in China, much like Hong Kong. French, British, and Russian quarters retain distinctive characteristics.

People mill about waiting for something that never happens. But they're quite content and the holiday atmosphere persists.

I watch this group of young people for quite a while. They look like students.

A group of foreigners stands out amid thousands of Chinese participants.

In summer, Shanghai is hot and because of the lowland terrain, sweaty. Dress like this is common.

After waiting all afternoon, when nothing happens, the locals continue to mill about the streets after night falls.

They seem not to want to go home despite the late hour.

Back at the Bund, they're still all waiting. Nothing happens, although I did hear later that fireworks were used nearby, for the party cadres.
